after coaching the juvenile section of the tournament, katie found out that there were no other competitors in her weight bracket, so she would have to spar against the Masters category (ages 30+) instead of her normal Adult bracket (ages 18-29).
the first round began with katie getting seven points before waiting out the rest of the match in a hard-to-fight position, keeping her opponent from scoring any points whatsoever. after six minutes, she was confirmed as the winner.
in the second round, her opponent was twenty pounds heavier and taller, along with being over twelve years older. the six minute match was spent standing (jiu jitsu is usually an on-the-mat sport, with the majority of the moves based around the competitor being on their back), with the heavier woman trying to trip katie up and use a take-down, and katie literally jumping over her swinging foot. the match ended in a draw, with no points on either side (quite a feat, since the opponent was trying to simply pull katie down using her weight advantage). since the tournament was running late, the ref decided not to let it go into overtime, and just called the opponent the winner since she was more aggressive.
it was a good turnout for the Yorba Linda BJJ gym, and it was a great way to prep for the more intense NABJJF tournament tomorrow :)
